Ensemble old town Lauingen
File number E-7-73-144-1.
The ensemble encloses the historical core of the city of Lauingen, the boundaries of which are marked by the partially preserved outer city fortifications - city wall and former moat. The backbone of the city located on the high terrace above the Danube is the elongated Herzog-Georg-Straße. Originally undoubtedly equipped with a market function, this street connects older settlement centers and at the same time enables the order of the probably Staufer city founding in the late 12th century with an almost right-angled cross-alley system that covers older structures.
One of these settlement cores, the settlement of Lauingen, which already existed in Carolingian times, is believed to be in the southwest part of the city; the late Gothic-early modern church building, in its eccentric location, instead of a previous building designates such relationships.
The second core of the settlement is handed down by the name of the northeast quarter - Hofviertel. The late medieval bourgeoisie then created a center there through the Hofturm (Schimmelturm) as the city tower and the town hall. The minor expansion of the city in 1307 to the north-east was given its own accent that rounded off the skyline of the city in the early 15th century at the latest with the St. Andrew's Church.
While the high medieval city was limited to the elevated terrace, the Danube front changed in the late Middle Ages, as the buildings and walls descended into the Danube lowlands from the early 15th century under Duke Ludwig the Bearded, but above all through the 1472 ff the south corner of the city pushed castle of the rich dukes of Bavaria-Landshut. With this, the Wittelsbachers, heirs of the Hohenstaufen as early as 1268, presented themselves as the city lords.
The late medieval city may have been a half-timbered town with houses facing the street with their gables. Many individual examples in the side streets provide evidence of this. By contrast, the main street in particular has been upgraded with stone buildings since the 16th century. The gradient between the more demanding development of the main street and the group of streets facing the Danube from the Hofviertel to the more detailed, structured craft districts was emphasized again.
The expansion of the city to the Danube is, also with arable land, more loosely, almost suburban. Baroque ornamentation remains reserved, solidity is the sign of the modest bourgeois wealth that has grown out of trade and industry despite the competition of the great imperial cities. Only the town hall, which was still trying to combine baroque pathos with new fashion in 1783/90, made a claim that measured against that of the Schimmelturm.
After the demolition of the city gates and towers as well as parts of the city wall in the second half of the 19th century, there was not only more building activity outside the former borders, but houses were also rebuilt and rebuilt in the old town.

Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
