Schoenberg

Ensemble town center Schönberg

File number E-2-72-147-1

The ensemble includes the market square and the church square with surrounding buildings. The road, which extends in an S-shaped line on the ridge of a hilltop, widens from the west first to the church square, then after a small transverse road axis to the market square (the eastern part of which was named Luitpoldplatz). The street is narrowed in the east and west by protruding house corners, a substitute for the fact that the market itself was never paved. The choice of the site on a hill ridge surrounded by higher mountains and therefore particularly climatically protected, which in turn descends on three sides, expresses a type of settlement that is characteristic of the area.

The Schönberg market was an important stop on the old Passau – Regen road, a full day's drive from Passau and just under a day's drive from Regen. The layout of the typical Bavarian street market in its elongated 1: 8 proportion dates from the end of the 13th century, when the Counts of Hals granted market rights. Fire disasters five times, including 1661, 1810, 1834, have repeatedly reduced the medieval population so that today's appearance mainly dates from the 19th century.

The church, which dominates the market square with its choir closure and tower, has been the vicariate of Passau's cathedral since at least 1375. This sphere of influence, the many transport trips of the Schönberg merchants to the three-river city and the involvement of Italian builders after the fire in 1834 explain the inner-city construction of the horizontal rampart walls, which were sometimes referred to as "Schönberg's Italian style" and viewed as an example of the rural simplification of an urban architectural ideal can be. The ensemble, which is well-balanced with business, residential, public and guest houses, is hardly disturbed as a whole, despite new buildings and shop window enlargements.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
