The beginnings of the Archdiocese of Trnava lie in the Apostolic Administratur Trnava , which was ecclesiastically separated from the Archdiocese of Esztergom on May 29, 1922 and which was founded in 1977 by Pope Paul VI. was raised with the Apostolic Constitution Qui divino to the archbishopric and the seat of a metropolitan .

The Archdiocese was renamed the Archdiocese of Bratislava-Trnava by decree of the Congregation for Bishops of May 31, 1995. On February 14, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI. the area around Bratislava and established the Archdiocese of Bratislava , which was also raised to the seat of the Metropolitan . Trnava was assigned to the Archdiocese of Bratislava as a suffragan, but still retained the rank of archbishopric, whose archbishops do not wear a pallium .
