List of honorary citizens of Memmingen

The honorary citizenship is the highest municipal award of the city of Memmingen . It is awarded to citizens who have made special contributions to the city. The legal basis is the respective municipal code. In addition to honorary citizenship, the city also awards a ring of honor.

Since 1866, as far as can be determined from the files, the following persons have been made honorary citizens.

  1. Karl Friedrich Dobel (* 1819; † 1891)
    City librarian and city archivist
    Awarded on November 16, 1866
  2. Wilhelm von Behringer (* 1820; † 1902)
    Appeals judge
    Awarded on July 9, 1869
    Behringer was a member of the state parliament from 1863 to 1869, was President of the Senate and from 1871 to 1874 a member of the Reichstag. In recognition of both his efforts for the national connection of the south with the north of Germany, as well as his achievements for the good of the fatherland and in appreciation of his zealous efforts for the special interests of the city of Memmingen, he was made an honorary citizen.
  3. Winfried Hörmann von Hörbach (born June 25, 1821 in Mainz, † October 21, 1896 in Munich)

    Hormann was honored in recognition of his services to the constituency of Kempten in general and to the city of Memmingen in particular.
  4. Gustav Ritter von Prinzing (* 1833; † 1910)

    Awarded on September 3, 1891
    The appointment was made in recognition of the services to the education and instruction system of the city and as the founder and chairman of the Ludwigslehrerinnenseminar and for his almost 30 years of blessed activity in the city.

    Wagner was a member of the state parliament and the Reichstag from 1887 to 1904. He was granted honorary citizenship for his services as a member of parliament.
  7. Paul Ritter von Köberle (born May 19, 1866 in Memmingen; † February 4, 1948 in Rammelsbach)
    Lieutenant General
    Awarded on January 31, 1918
    As major general and leader of a reserve division in a critical situation, Köberle brought the enemy attempt to break through on July 31, 1917 at a crucial point in Flanders by means of particularly clever, prudent, energetic measures. After being awarded the Military Max Josef Order, he also became an honorary citizen in Memmingen.
  8. Monsignor Max Rippler (* 1855 - † 1923)

    Awarded in 1921
    Rippler was made an honorary citizen for his 36 years of self-sacrificing work in the Catholic community, in school and in the poor council, in gratitude for the charities he set up with a rare sense of sacrifice and for his continued striving to maintain peace in and with the community.

    With the award, the city honored his more than 30 years of meritorious work in the beautification association and his unremitting work and his great financial sacrifice for the creation and maintenance of the walking paths and facilities around the city.

    Berndl was initially from 1926 to 1932 legal counsel in Memmingen and then from 1932, except 1945-1956, Lord Mayor of the city. On the occasion of his 75th birthday, he was made an honorary citizen for his great services to the city, including its salvation from the destruction in 1945.

    Josef Miller represented the interests of the state and the region in the Bavarian state parliament for almost three decades and, as far as possible, especially the city of Memmingen, and for 18 years stood up for the citizens of Memmingen in the city council. He has made a special contribution to the well-being of the city.
