With the incorporation of Zöblitz as the last incorporation into the city of Marienberg , the city is one of the largest cities in Saxony . The city of Marienberg is the largest city in terms of area in the Erzgebirge district.

On July 1, 2002, 3.5139 ha and 18 residents were reclassified from Marienberg to Pobershau. In return, 2.5560 hectares were reclassified from Pobershau to Marienberg. On January 16, 2003, 0.0810 hectares were reclassified from Pobershau to Marienberg.
