List of airports in the Maldives

The list of airports in the Maldives includes international and regional airports and airfields of the Maldives .

For the airports, the identification data IATA code, ICAO code, use, island on which the airport is located, the atoll, the administrative district as well as the opening date and operator are given.

The history of aviation in the Maldives goes back to World War II when the British built a makeshift runway at Gan Naval Base , which was later taken over and expanded by the Royal Air Force. The first airport controlled by the Maldivian government was built in 1960 on the island of Hulhulé near Malé . In the late 1980s and early 1990s, three small domestic airports were built to develop remote atolls. Until 2010, all airports were state-owned and operated by the state-owned Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). Since the democratization of the country and the associated opening of the economy, privately operated airports are now possible. The economic opening triggered a building boom, so four new airports were built in 2011/12, and more are being planned.

Malé Airport was officially named after President Ibrahim Nasir in 2011 . With effect from January 1, 2017, the airport was renamed Velana International Airport again .
