List of church buildings in Leipzig
All churches and former churches in Leipzig are listed in the list of church buildings in Leipzig . Churches are those Christian buildings that were built specifically for a sacred function or that were rebuilt to achieve such a function. Residential and commercial buildings with prayer rooms inside were not taken into account.
The churches developed along with the expansion of the city. The two largest and most important church buildings of the Middle Ages were in Old Leipzig. This refers to the area that comprised the inner city within the Promenade Ring and the suburbs until 1889 - the year in which Reudnitz and Anger-Crottendorf were first incorporated into Leipzig. A wreath depicts the incorporated localities around old Leipzig. In many of them the rural character with the old village churches has been preserved. Some village churches that had become too small were replaced by larger new buildings in the second half of the 19th century after the former villages had developed into populous industrial suburbs. Most churches, however, were founded as new foundations.
Accordingly, the following tables are grouped according to churches within the ring , churches in the suburbs and former village churches , plus the numerous new church buildings since the 19th century .
Note: The names of abandoned sacred buildings are in italics in the tables .
