In October 2007 Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva decreed the opening of the embassy in Bamako. Between 2002 and 2007, the volume of trade between Brazil and West Africa increased from USD 5 billion to USD 15 billion. Against this background, the embassy in Bamako is intended to increase and diversify trade. From 2004 to 2006, the trading volume with Mali doubled to 16 million USD. The export from Mali to Brazil consisted of 98.4% (4.5 million USD) cotton. Together with Burkina Faso , Chad and Benin , Mali is striving as Cotton-4 in the World Trade Organization against subsidies for cotton production in the EU and the USA.
