In 1334 there was a Romanesque church building on the same site. The Gothic chancel with a cross-ribbed yoke was built at the end of the 14th century. The tower, originally with an onion roof, may have been built afterwards. Around 1500 the nave was extended by a second ship by master builder Mathes Klayndl . The church burned four times between 1709 and 1884. In 1834 a wide stairway to the church square was laid out and in 1862 the pointed spire was built. In 1957 Johann Pirchner built a new organ in the old baroque case. The last major renovation, which affected the 47.5 m high tower, the plaster, the roof and the windows, came to an end with the celebratory tower cross in 1995.
