By the end of 1997, the South African government recognized the government in Taipei . At the end of 1997, about 30,000 Taiwanese were living in South Africa, of whom about 300 were entrepreneurs. In the period from 2004 to 2007, estimates ranged from 0.1 to 0.4 million Chinese in South Africa
