Lithuanians in Germany
Lithuanians in Germany are a small group of foreigners in the Federal Republic of Germany. At the end of the Second World War there were around 65,000 war refugees in Germany who were previously Lithuanian citizens (before the Soviet occupation of Lithuania in 1940). After the Second World War (after emigrating to the USA , Canada , Australia and other countries) around 7550 Lithuanians (1954) remained in Germany. From 1957, former German citizens (mainly ethnic German repatriates from the former East Prussian Memelland ) who lived in the Soviet Republic of Lithuania were able to move to the Federal Republic of Germany. This group also included Lithuanians of German origin who were not German citizens before 1945. After joining the EU, many guest workers came from Lithuania. In 2017, 53,200 Lithuanian citizens lived in Germany. 415 doctors from Lithuania have a license to practice medicine in Germany (as of December 31, 2017). In 2017, 27 doctors with Lithuanian citizenship were newly admitted, 25 of them without a territorial designation ( assistant doctors ).
