description

Appearance and bark

Lithocarpus hancei grows as an evergreen tree and reaches heights of 15 meters, rarely more. The vegetative parts of the plant are bare. The branches have a bare, yellow-brown to gray colored bark , which is usually covered by a thin, transparent layer of wax.

leaf

The leaves are arranged alternately and spirally on the branches. The petiole is 0.5 to 4 inches long. The simple, thin paper-like to thick leathery leaf blade is ovate, elliptical-ovoid to almost elliptical or lanceolate with a length of 5 to 10 centimeters and a width of 2.5 to 5 centimeters. The spreader tip is rounded, blunt, tapering or pointed. The leaf blade is evenly colored and has a white coating on the upper side when it is dry. From the main nerve, six to 13 thin, clearly recognizable lateral nerves branch off on each side. The leaf margin is entire and more or less bent back. There are stipules present.

Inflorescence and flower

Lithocarpus hancei is monoecious-separated sex ( monoecious ). The flowering period extends from July to August and the seeds ripen from August to November of the following year. The male inflorescences are panicle-shaped, sometimes twisted and rarely longer than 10 centimeters. Sometimes female flowers are also formed in the male inflorescence. The female inflorescences are clustered at the branch ends and usually contain three to five, rarely just one flower.

Infructescence and fruit

The 6 to 8 centimeter long fruit stand has an approximately 8 millimeter thick rachis . With a height of 3 to 7 millimeters and a diameter of 1 to 2 centimeters, the flat, bowl-shaped to plate-shaped fruit cup (cupula) covers around a third of the nut fruit . With a length of 0.8 to 2 centimeters and a diameter of 0.6 to 2.5 centimeters, the nuts are flattened, spherical, hemispherical or broadly conical with a rounded, pointed or only rarely flattened upper end.

Occurrence

The natural range of Lithocarpus hancei includes the Chinese provinces of Fujian , Guangdong , Guangxi , Guizhou , Hainan , Hubei , Jiangxi , Sichuan , Yunnan and Zhejiang , as well as Taiwan .

Lithocarpus hancei colonizes different habitats and comes at altitudes of up to 2600 meters.
