Live at the Village Vanguard is a live album by the Marc Ribot Trio . It was recorded at a concert at New York's legendary jazz club Village Vanguard in 2012 and released by Pi Recordings in2014.

Emergence

The concert recorded on the album was Marc Ribot's first appearance at the Village Vanguard as leader and only his second appearance there at all (after a concert as accompanist for Allen Toussaint ). It was part of the band's six-day engagement at the club. It was also Henry Grimes ' first concert at the club since December 18, 1966, when he played in Albert Ayler's band. Shortly after the Ayler concert, Grimes disappeared from the jazz scene for three decades .

The songs on the album are all interpretations of well-known works from jazz history, including the jazz standards Ol 'Man River and I'm Confessin' (That I Love You) as well as songs by John Coltrane and Albert Ayler. The guitarist Ribot takes over the parts that were played in the original versions by saxophonists . Only one of the bonus tracks only available digitally, Fat Man Blues , is Ribot's own composition.

reception

The album received mostly positive reviews. It was reviewed twice on the All About Jazz website and rated both times with 4½ out of five possible stars. Both reviewers praised the originality and uniqueness of Ribot's guitar playing, but also the quality of the playing of the whole trio together. The album's reviewer on Allmusic came to a similar conclusion :

“In the grand tradition of the genre, the key here is the interplay between the musicians, not simply the bandleader, though the sharp report of Ribot's tone and the volleys of notes he fires off during the more extreme passages will sound more than familiar to anyone acquainted with his work. "

“In keeping with the genre's great tradition, the key is the interlude of the musicians, not just [the playing] of the leader, though the clear delivery of Ribot's sound and the hail of notes he fires during the more extreme passages are more than familiar should sound for everyone who knows his work. "

A review in the Los Angeles Times also praised the combination of the quieter standards with the “wild” pieces of Ayler's and Coltrane's. In the Financial Times the album got four stars out of five, where it was described as "[f] iery power group adds raw blues and thumping backbeat swing to the expressionism of mid-1960s jazz" .

The editors of the Free Jazz Blog chose Live at the Village Vanguard in the list of the best albums of 2014. In the corresponding review on the blog, the album was rated with the maximum possible number of 5 stars. As in the New York Times concert review by Nate Chinen, the live experience of the concerts on which the album is based received high praise. In the annual survey of music critics by NPR ( NPR Jazz Critics Poll ) landed Live at the Village Vanguard in sixth place.
