Elizabeth "Liz" Masakayan (born December 31, 1964 in Quezon City ) is an American former volleyball and beach volleyball player of Filipino origin. As a player and trainer, she took part in three Olympic tournaments.

Career

Masakayan first played baseball on a boys' team after moving to the United States at the age of four. Later she was also active in athletics and soccer while studying at UCLA . In 1986 she became a national volleyball player and won the bronze medal with the team at the Goodwill Games in Moscow that same year . Two years later she took part in the Olympic Games in Seoul . The tournament ended for the USA in the preliminary round. The performance at the 1990 World Cup was more successful , when the team achieved third place after a semi-final defeat against China with a win against Cuba . Because of multiple knee injuries, Masakayan then withdrew from volleyball.

She formed a beach volleyball duo with Linda Chisholm and won several tournaments in the WPVA series in 1991 and 1992 . In the next few years she continued her successful streak with her new partner Karolyn Kirby . Masakayan / Kirby won various WPVA competitions and two FIVB tournaments as well as the gold medal at the Goodwill Games 1994 in Saint Petersburg . At the 1997 World Cup , she competed with Elaine Youngs and finished fifth. After a few more appearances with Kirby, Youngs became her permanent partner in late 1998. The next year Masakayan / Youngs finished third at the World Championships in Marseille after they were defeated by their compatriots Davis / Jordan in the semifinals . After winning three open tournaments in Vitória , Espinho and Dalian , they parted ways for the time being. Masakayan and Dianne DeNecochea were eliminated in the second round of the 2001 World Cup against the later finalists Sandra Pires and Minello (Brazil).

In 2004 she became the trainer of her former teammate Youngs, who won bronze with Holly McPeak at the Olympic tournament in Athens . In Beijing in 2008 , Youngs and Nicole Branagh finished fifth under her guidance.
