The Lobo Marinho is a built in 2003 Ro-Ro - Ferry Portuguese shipping company Porto Santo Line , the liner service between Madeira and the neighboring island of Porto Santo wrong.

prehistory

After the ferry connection between Funchal on Madeira and Porto Santo was awarded, the shipping company Porto Santo Line , which was only founded in 1989, bought a used ferry, which it called Lobo Marinho (German: "Sea Lion").

This ship, built in 1968 on Aalborg Værft in Denmark , was 88 meters long and 15.65 meters wide, had four drive motors with 2180 hp each and could carry 885 passengers. From 1968 to 1984 she operated in Norway as Christian IV between Kristiansand and Hirtshals . In 1984 it was sold to Kuala Lumpur and renamed Pernas Safari , from 1994 to 1996 it operated as a Maltese safari between Bari and Corfu before it reached Madeira.

Construction and technical data

In view of the increasing number of passengers, the shipping company had ordered a newer and larger Ro-Ro ferry from the Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo shipyard on September 24, 2001. This was on 28 January 2002 at the shipyard Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg on down Kiel . The hull was towed to Portugal and expanded at the Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo shipyard under construction number C237 and completed on May 30, 2003. At the christening, the name Lobo Marinho was transferred to the new ship, the old ferry was sold. The Lobo Marinho is the shipping company's only ship.

Its length is 111.70 meters, it is 20.04 meters wide and has a draft of 5 meters. It is measured with 8072 GT or 2,421 NRZ and has a load capacity of 1,590 tons. The drive consists of two MaK - diesel engines , whose performance together 16,000 KW is. These act on two controllable pitch propellers via reduction gears , and the ship reaches a speed of around 21 knots . The ferry can carry up to 1153 passengers and 145 cars or 100 cars and 14 trucks. The crew consists of 47 officers and men.

history

After the maiden voyage on June 4, 2003, the new ship took over the liner service between Funchal and the neighboring island of Porto Santo. Since then, the company's ferry has been commuting between the two large islands of the archipelago almost daily .

In regular service, the ship usually leaves Funchal in the morning at 8 a.m. and arrives in Porto Santo a good two hours later. The return journey takes place in the evening at 6 p.m. On Fridays, the trip from Funchal is at 7:00 p.m. and the return trip from Porto Santo at 10:30 p.m. This almost daily timetable is supplemented by a second trip on selected days. On Tuesday, the weekly rest day, there are no trips by the ship.

The Lobo Marinho not only transports passengers - especially tourists who do not want to reach Porto Santo by plane - also supplies for the island's residents. Few figures are available on the use of the line: in 2014 the connection was used by around 253,000 passengers.

Incidents and special features

In May 2015, the Lobo Marinho was involved in an incident with a surfer. The ship from Porto Santo came close to a surfer and almost hit him with the bow. The man was rescued and taken to Funchal by boat.

The shipping company supported the CETUS project from July to December 2016 . The aim of this project was to monitor whales in the Macaronesia region and to provide research with data on whale occurrences and at the same time included an environmental education component. During its voyages between Madeira and Porto Santo , the Lobo Marinho served as an observation platform for counting the whales sighted.
