Lockhart is the county capital and seat of the county seat of Caldwell County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located at the junction of US Highway 183 with Highway 142 in southeast Texas, 48 km southeast of Austin and has a total area of 29.2 km², of which 0.1 km² is water.

According to the 2000 census, 11,615 people lived here in 3,627 households and 2,691 families. The population density was 398.6 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 65.42% White, 12.68% African American, 0.67% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, and 18.00% other ethnic groups. About 2.82% were mixed race and 47.41% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,627 households, 38.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.0% of these were married couples living together. 16.6% were single mothers and 25.8% were non-families. 21.9% of all households were single households and there were people living in 10.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.28.
26.5% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.2% 18 to 24, 32.1% 25 to 44, 18.9% 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 93.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 89.4 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 35,763 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,111. Males had a median income of $ 29,329 versus $ 20,923 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,621. 14.6% of the population and 12.2% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 14.8% were children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 18.1% were 65 or older.
