Loga is a municipality and the capital of the Loga department of the same name in Niger .

geography

Loga lies at the transition from the Sahel to the greater Sudan landscape . The municipality is divided into four districts, 64 administrative villages, 95 traditional villages, eight hamlets, 15 camps and a water point. The neighborhoods are called Alfagaye, Fada, Tombo and Wanzam Kouara. The neighboring communities of Logas are Kourfeye Center and Tondikandia in the north, Soucoucoutane in the east, Falwel , Mokko and Sokorbé in the south and Dantchandou and Tagazar in the west.

history

Loga was founded around 1800. France brought the region populated by Zarma largely under its control through the establishment of several military posts in 1897 and 1898. In August 1899 and February 1900, Zarma units carried out surprise attacks on French troops in the village of Sargadji near Loga, who were badly hit. On November 16 and 18, 1900, a French military expedition captured Sargadji and Loga and destroyed both places. The population fled to the bushland and only returned gradually. It was not until 1905 that order was restored to such an extent that a French administration could be introduced in Loga through the establishment of a canton . In the 1980s, the place was notorious for the widespread drug abuse there . The then head of state Seyni Kountché therefore referred to Loga in a well-known saying as “Niger's Jamaica ”.

population

At the 1988 census, Loga had 3,876 inhabitants and at the 2001 census it had 5,906 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, after an increase in the municipal area, the population was 82,400.

Economy and Infrastructure

The city is located in a zone where rain-fed agriculture is practiced. Labor migration abroad is also of economic importance . Loga is the seat of a Tribunal d'Instance, one of the 30 civil courts nationwide , which are below the ten civil courts of the first instance (Tribunal de Grande Instance). National road 14 leading to Dosso and national road 23 leading to Dogondoutchi run through the urban area .
