The Gleisdorf – Weiz railway , also known as the Weizer Bahn or Weizerbahn , is a standard-gauge railway line between Gleisdorf and Weiz .

history

On April 17, 1888, Anton Rintelen , Josef Mosdorfer and Johann Pichler received the building and operating permit (granting of a concession) for a standard-gauge local railway between Gleisdorf and Weiz. Construction of the 15 km long route began in the same year by the construction company Skala & Glanz. On May 9, 1889, the local railway company in Gleisdorf was founded.

After a year of construction, the line was officially opened on July 28, 1889 (management: Austrian State Railways ). The opening train left Gleisdorf at 9:30 a.m. and was festively decorated with the Weizer market coat of arms, wreaths and flowers. On the drive to Weiz he was warmly welcomed by the population. With the start of the scheduled train service, the daily stagecoach service to Gleisdorf was discontinued and mail was taken over by the railway.

On December 14, 1911, the opening of the narrow-gauge Weiz - Birkfeld ( Feistritztalbahn ) line was celebrated. This increased the importance of the Weiz station, which became a transfer and reloading station for goods traffic ( talc ).

In 1922, today's Steiermarkbahn (StB) took over the management of the Gleisdorf - Weiz line. In 1933 the first railcars ran directly from Weiz to Graz and the “Weiz Stadt” stop was built. On June 30, 1942, the "Aktiengesellschaft der Lokalbahn Gleisdorf - Weiz" was dissolved and the concession and the entire property were transferred to the State of Styria .

In 1964/65, when the DE1 and DE2 diesel locomotives were put into operation, the switch from steam operation to diesel operation was completed. In 1972 the Albersdorf stop was built. In the years 1991 to 1995 the line was renovated and new safety devices (traffic lights at level crossings, underpasses, etc.) were built, which increased the line's top speed to 90 km / h. In 1994 the Gleisdorf - Weiz route was integrated into the new Styrian transport association .

Both passenger and freight traffic are handled on the route. The route is operated with diesel traction vehicles, which are also equipped with a radio remote control module. This makes it possible to only handle the shift with the driver and the motor vehicle. The use of a slider is no longer absolutely necessary.

The reception building of the Weiz train station

In December 2007, a rapid transit system was put into operation in Styria, especially in the greater Graz area, with the S-Bahn Styria . This led to an extensive expansion of the train connections from Graz in all directions. The Gleisdorf - Weiz route (R 531) is integrated into this S-Bahn system, which was developed by the Styrian transport department under Provincial Councilor Edlinger-Ploder .

On December 12, 2010, the Styrian S-Bahn was expanded to include the Styrian Ostbahn (Graz - Gleisdorf - Fehring ) (S 3), and the “Weizer Bahn” also became the S 31. That means more connections, regular traffic and better connections.

To improve the train destination designation for the S-Bahn in the greater Graz area, the names for the stations in Weiz have been changed. The stop at Weiz train station is no longer referred to as “Weiz”, but “Weiz Bahnhof”. The terminus “Weiz Stadt” was called “Weiz” until 2016 and was replaced by “Weiz Zentrum” or “Weiz Nord”. The “Fladnitz / Neudorf” stop has been changed to “ Unterfladnitz ”.

Since 2011, three diesel-electric two-part GTW railcars from Stadler Rail have been used for passenger services Weiz - Gleisdorf - Graz . These are compatible with the GTW of the GKB. The sets have low-floor entrances and facilities for the disabled, but are not always barrier-free. The air-conditioned passenger rooms have 97 seats. There is a socket for power supply for mobile communication devices for each group of two or four seats. Stop request buttons are located above the seats and by the exits.

For part of the train runs and as a reserve, two 5047 of the StB are kept. Previously, the route was partially served by ÖBB 5022 . A used push-pull train consisting of three light steel wagons of Swiss design was acquired for high-end traffic and replaced in 2014 by used CS push-pull train cars from ÖBB . The control car of the old train was installed in the Stainz station in 2017 and is used there as a guest room for the station inn.

Locomotives of the Siemens ER 20 and Gmeinder D 110 BB types are used for cross-regional freight transport . Additional locomotives are available for shunting services and local freight transport (Gmeinder series).

expansion

Weiz train station was redesigned on May 23, 1998. A park & ride area and a pedestrian overpass were built. From 2008 to 2009 the station building was modernized. A modern waiting room with an information and ticket counter as well as a new toilet facility were built and the customer area made barrier-free .

In August 2009 the new “Weiz Interspar” stop was opened. In November 2009, a dynamic passenger information system was put into operation at the stops. The passenger thus has the opportunity to find out about the departure time of the next trains to the minute. The date, time and outside temperature are also displayed. In the event of breakdowns or disruptions in train traffic, passengers are informed and replacement measures are immediately apparent. In addition, the dispatcher in Weiz can use loudspeakers to inform passengers at the stops by means of announcements.

On May 28, 2009 the first section of the newly built electronic security system was put into operation. It was completed in January 2010.

In autumn 2011 the Unterfladnitz stop was equipped with a stop request indicator. From this point on, all stops on the Gleisdorf - Weiz route are equipped with this facility.

On February 27, 2015, the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the conversion of the existing connecting line from Weiz train station to the Andritz Hydro plant took place. From April to November 2016, the railway line was extended by around 900 meters through the city center of Weiz. The railway is operated on its own track on this route, it has been rededicated from a connecting railway to a public railway. In the course of the new construction of the Weiz thoroughfare, two new stops for trains and buses were built. In the area of the new “Weiz Zentrum” train stop, the Siegfried-Esterl-Gasse bus station will be a hub for regional bus routes. The new S-Bahn terminus “Weiz Nord” is located at the level of the football stadium and is about 200 meters from the Weiz Federal School Center. The completion and commissioning of these new stops was scheduled for May / June 2017, but was delayed until September 10, 2018.
