description

Vegetative characteristics

Lomatium stebbinsii is a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 5 to 15 centimeters. As Überdauerungsorgan is a tuber formed which is egg-shaped with a diameter of less than 2 centimeters to spherical. There is no recognizable stem axis .

The two to five basal leaves are divided into leaf sheath, petiole and leaf blade. The leaves are green, shiny, and bare. The petiole is 2 to 3 cm long and has a leaf sheath from the center to the base or along its entire length. The leaf blade is 2 to 5 cm long and triangular-ovate and simple to double pinnate. If they are doubly pinnate, then leaf sections of the first order are tripartite. With a length of 2 to 12 mm and a width of 1 to 2 millimeters, the blade sections are linear with a pointed upper end.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from March to May or from the end of March to the beginning of April. The inflorescence shafts are 5 and 15 inches long. The double-gold inflorescences consist of two to seven small bulbs . There are no bracts and bracts . The two to seven ascending rays are 1 to 12 millimeters long. A doll contains 2 to 15 flowers. The flower stalks are 1 to 2 millimeters long.

The flowers are hermaphroditic. The petals are (lemon) yellow.

The Doppelachäne divides into two, with a length of 6 to 9 millimeters, narrow-elliptical and flattened partial fruits. The partial fruits are ribbed; between these ribs there are one to four oil channels. The wings are tiny and much smaller than the fruiting body. The fruits ripen from mid-April to mid-June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence and endangerment

The endemic species Lomatium stebbinsii occurs in California only on the border of the central and western Sierra Nevada in the counties Calaveras and Tuolumne , and thrives there especially in Stanislaus National Forest . There is also evidence from Amador County .

Lomatium stebbinsii grows on stony volcanic soils and marl . It is found in yellow pine forests and in the chaparral as well as in lower mountain forests at altitudes of 1250 to 1700 meters.

The California Native Plant Society lists Lomatium stebbinsii as "threatened" = English imperiled . It is endangered by vehicles, deforestation and the associated transport.

Systematics

The first description of Lomatium stebbinsii was made in 1979 by Mark A. Schlessmann and Lincoln Constance in Two New Species of Tuberous Lomatiums (Umbelliferae) in Madroño , Volume 26, Issue 1, pages 37-43. The specific epithet honors the discoverer G. Ledyard Stebbins.

Lomatium stebbinsii shows differences to the otherwise similar Lomatium farinosum var. Hambleniae (Mathias & Constance) Schlessman in terms of the root shape, the pseudo-stem, the division of the leaves and the fruit size . In terms of its small size, short fruit stalks and relatively short segments of leaves, it is more similar to Lomatium piperi Coulter & Rose or Tauschia hooveri Mathias & Constance.
