List of Joseph Haydn's symphonies
In 1908, Eusebius Mandyczewski compiled a list of Joseph Haydn's symphonies for the Breitkopf & Härtel publishing house, listing 104 works. Since the date of composition was not known for many early works, Mandyczewski had arranged the sequence of numbers according to the dates noted on the preserved sources or known from purchase and sales catalogs. The numbering does not reflect the creation, but rather the distribution of the works. In 1957 this list was taken over by Anthony van Hoboken in his thematic-bibliographical catalog raisonné as group I and expanded by four works: the Sinfonia concertante from 1792 (Hob. I: 105), a then-lost symphony in D major (Hob. I : 106) and two early symphonies (Hob. I: 107 and 108). The latter were designated by Howard Chandler Robbins Landon in the complete edition of the symphonies published by him as "A" and "B". For Symphony No. 63, Haydn used movements from other works. Of the two versions initially differentiated and published in this symphony, the first version is now considered invalid. Her two final movements are published together with the first two movements of an overture as a separate symphony.
The Haydn edition also lists the final movement in D major (Hoboken index Ia: 4) in the volumes for the symphonies. It is unclear to which symphony it belonged (possibly for symphony 73, see there).
The symphony No. 106 was originally only known due to the entry of the opening bars in Haydn's draft catalog. When a copy of a D major Allegro by Haydn was found, it was recognized as the first movement of the alleged symphony. Based on stylistic features, Haydn researchers suspected that the work could be the overture to the opera Le Pescatrici . This overture - possibly in the original three-movement - was considered lost until then, probably due to the great fire in Eszterháza of 1779.
The chronology of the group of works according to Mandyczewski or according to the Hoboken directory is now considered outdated; the Hoboken numbers are nevertheless the most widespread reference to Haydn's symphonies in publishing and CD catalogs. "The retention of the counting of Hobokens, which has long been established in literature and practice, thus saves Haydn's extensive oeuvre from the hopeless confusion that would result if his works were assigned new 'correct' numbers every few years." (Anton Gabmayer)
Some works have programmatic titles - such as The Clock , The Bear, or with the Bang - but mostly not by Haydn. The group of symphonies nos. 82–87, composed 1785–1786, is called the Paris symphonies . Haydn's last symphonies (Hob. I: 93-104), which were written for London concerts between 1792 and 1795 and are therefore called London symphonies , are particularly well-known .
Haydn played a key role in the development of the form of the classical symphony - e.g. B. four movements , sonata main movement form - involved.
