The Lophiocarpaceae are a family in the order of the carnation-like (Caryophyllales) within the flowering plants . The areas are located in tropical and subtropical Africa and Asia. The center of biodiversity is southwest Africa.

description

They are annual or perennial herbaceous plants or subshrubs . The leaves are simple. Stipules are missing.

They form racemose or zymous inflorescences . The small flowers are five-fold. There are many petals or they are absent in Lophiocarpus . There are many or four stamens . The pollen grains are tricolated. Two carpels are a single-chamber ovary grown. There are one, five or many ovules per carpel. A capsule fruit or achene is formed. In Corbichonia , the seeds have an aril .

Systematics

In the past, these species were incorporated into the families of the Molluginaceae , Phytolaccaceae or Aizoaceae . Molecular biological studies have suggested that these species form a monophyletic group. Hence they are now listed as the Lophiocarpaceae family. The Lophiocarpaceae family was described by Alexander Borissowitsch Doweld and James Lauritz Reveal in New Syllabus of Plant Families , p. 795, April 2007 and in Phytologia . 90, p. 416, set up December 2008. The type genus is Lophiocarpus Turcz.

The Lophiocarpaceae family contains only two genera with about six species:

The synonym Lophiocarpus (Kunth) Miquel for Sagittaria L. is also found as a genus of the Alismataceae Vent.
