Lorenz Frølich (born October 25, 1820 in Hellerup , today Copenhagen , † October 25, 1908 in Copenhagen) was a Danish painter , illustrator , draftsman and graphic artist .

Life

Lorenz Frølich received his training from Martinus Rørbye , Christen Købke and Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg . From 1840 he lived mainly outside Denmark for the next 33 years. At first he lived in Munich and Dresden , where he was inspired by romantic painters such as Joseph von Führich , Ludwig Richter and Eduard Bendemann . He spent the years from 1846 to 1851 in Italy , after which he lived mostly in Paris for 22 years . In his younger years Frølich devoted himself to depicting animals, which earned him great recognition. Abroad, however, he dealt with history painting . During a visit to Denmark he painted the works Waldemar II. Affirms the Jutland law and Frederick IV. Receives the homage from the people of Schleswig , which were intended for a courtroom in Flensburg . Frølich also made two sketches for the stock exchange in Copenhagen, which, however, were not executed as large paintings.

Frølich was best known as a draftsman, illustrator and etcher , strongly influenced by his teacher Ludwig Richter. His etchings include works on Hero and Leander , on a Danish history book by Fabricius and short stories by Jules Verne . In Paris, Frølich drew over a thousand designs for woodcuts from children's life, which were published in France, Denmark and England and achieved world fame. From 1873 Lorenz Frølich lived again in Denmark, where he created the ceiling painting Gefion Plowing Zealand from Sweden in Frederiksborg Castle in 1882 and the frieze Danish Viking Trains.

For the city hall in Copenhagen he made the composition Aegir's Daughters , which was made of porcelain and was placed in the entrance area, and a series of pictorial works for the city hall. In 1883 Frølich completed his work Nordic Gods (30 etchings). After that he worked, among other things, with illustrations for newspapers and books. His drawings for Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales, on the other hand, date from his time in Paris. Frølich also dealt with portrait painting, scenes from everyday life (e.g. the day after the birth of the youngest ), fantasy works ( satyr family ) and created an altar painting in old age ( Adoration by the Shepherds , in the church of Hellerup).

Lorenz Frølich became a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1877 and received the title of professor in 1890 . In 1900, on his 80th birthday, Pietro Krohn published the volume Directory of Frølich's illustrations and etchings .
