history

In February 1949, the Hessian state parliament laid the foundation stone for the establishment of the Lotterie-Treuhandgesellschaft mbH Hessen. At that time, in the third reading, he passed the Sports Betting Act, so that on March 14, 1949, the "Staatliche Sportwetten GmbH Hessen" was officially founded. One month later, the first official Toto was played in Hesse. This was preceded by a special show of strength, because within days 180 acceptance points had to be created all over Hesse, betting slips had to be printed and the employees found who at that time had to evaluate the tips by hand with a template in painstaking detail. 70,000 betting slips were received for the first draw by April 9, 1949. The first profit determination took place in a gym in Wiesbadener Schwalbacher Straße. The first Toto Sunday brought in income of 117,000 German marks. In 1952, the "Staatliche Sportwetten GmbH Hessen" moved to Wiesbaden's Rosenstrasse, which is still the company's headquarters today.

Lotto 6 out of 49 only prevailed on June 29, 1956 in Hesse. At that time, the Hessian state parliament passed the law on the approval of the number lottery. The "State Numbers Lottery GmbH" officially started operations in Wiesbaden on July 15, 1956 and joined the German Lotto block directly. On September 2 of the year, the Hessians were able to place their lottery bets for the first time with what was then the "Hessen-Lotto" company. Shareholders were the state of Hesse and the "Staatliche Sportwetten GmbH". Already on October 9, 1955, the first drawing of the game formula 6 out of 49 took place in Hamburg, still without Hessian participation. The orphan girl Elvira Hahn drew the first winning numbers from a draw wheel in the former Hotel Mau. On September 4, 1965, the Hessischer Rundfunk broadcast the drawing for the first time from Studio 4 into the German living room.

Gradually, further lotteries and sports betting were introduced in Hessen . On October 18, 1993, the first ticket was electronically recorded in the headquarters of Lotto Hessen. After a test phase at selected sales outlets throughout the year, all sales outlets in Hesse went to the lottery company's online registration system on January 1, 1994. Since then, the almost 1.5 million weekly gaming and betting orders have been recorded and evaluated online in the Wiesbaden central computer.

In January 2016, Lotto Hessen became the new majority shareholder in the German Sports Lottery .
