Apprenticeship and wandering years

In 1813 he went to Rome and stayed there for two years before moving to Naples for two more years . He then stayed in Rome again until 1819.

In 1817 Dupré first took part in the Paris Salon with a portrait of the painter Dunouy. In Italy he studied and copied ancient monuments and vase paintings and practiced portrait and landscape painting.

Greece trip

In 1819 he visited Greece to accompany three British tourists, for whom he painted pictures of the country's monuments and squares in return for bearing the cost of the trip. They traveled to Corfu , Epirus , Thessaly , Central Greece , the area around Attica and the Saronic Islands . Dupré then traveled on to Istanbul alone and to Bucharest at the invitation of Prince Michael Soutsou . The trip ended in Rome in April 1820.

Artistic success

In 1824 Dupré took part in the Paris Salon for the second time, where he received a gold medal for the work " Camillus expels the Gauls from Rome " and attracted attention with his pictures on Greek subjects.

His works from Greece were included in the great illustrated travel chronicle " Voyage à Athènes et à Constantinople, ou collection de portraits, de vues et de costumes grecs et ottomans, peints sur les lieux d'après nature, lithographiés et coloriés par L. Dupré, élève de David "published. It comprised 40 colored lithographs and 11 vignettes, mainly portraits and landscapes. In 1837, after his death, the " Album Grec " was published with twelve lithographs.
