Louis Koehler

Christian Louis Heinrich Köhler (born September 5, 1820 in Braunschweig , † February 16, 1886 in Königsberg i. Pr. ) Was a German pianist, conductor and composer.

Life

Köhler was a student of A. Sonnemann (piano), Christian LD Zinkeisen sen. , Joseph Adolph Leibrock (theory and harmony) and Christian Zinkeisen jun. (Violin) in Braunschweig. From 1839 to 1843 he continued his studies in Vienna , he studied theory and composition with Simon Sechter and Ignaz Ritter von Seyfried and piano on Carl Czerny's advice with Carl Maria von Bocklet .

From 1843 to 1847 he was theater music director in Marienburg and Elbing . In 1847 he came to the Königsberg City Theater as second conductor . At the same time he worked as a music teacher at his own music school. From it went Hermann Goetz , Adolf Jensen and Alfred Reisenauer forth. He was also a piano teacher and conductor of the singers' association. He was so sought after as a piano teacher that he set up so-called “piano circles” in order to be able to meet the demand. He wrote reviews for the highly respected Hartungsche Zeitung and pursued extensive journalistic activities.

He published the piano works by Franz Schubert , Ludwig van Beethoven and the complete works for piano by CM von Weber , among others . His compositions include a total of 314 works, including incidental music for "Helena" by Euripides , the operas "Prince and Painter", "Maria Dolores", " Gil Blas " and the ballet "The Magic Composer". They are less important and largely forgotten today, whereas his piano pedagogical works were repeatedly reissued into the 21st century.

Köhler was married to Johanna Borntraeger .
