Carl Maria von Bocklet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Maria von Bocklet (born January 30, 1801 in Prague , † July 15, 1881 in Vienna ) was an Austrian pianist , violinist , composer and music teacher.

life and work

Bocklet was a composition student in Prague with Friedrich Dionys Weber and also studied violin and piano. In Vienna he came into contact with Ludwig van Beethoven , who stood up for him. From 1820 Bocklet worked as a music teacher in Vienna and from 1821 was briefly first violinist in the orchestra of the Theater an der Wien , but then increasingly only worked as a pianist. He was on friendly terms with Franz Schubert and performed several of his piano works in public, some of them the first, including his Wanderer Fantasy D 760. Schubert dedicated his piano sonata in D major D 850 to him. He was also considered an excellent improviser . According to the first volume of the Austrian National Encyclopedia , published in 1835, Bocklet was " the first among Vienna’s piano virtuosos who are now living ".

In the 1840s, Bocklet largely withdrew from active concert life. His son Heinrich continued a private school he founded for four-hand piano playing. Carl Maria von Bocklet's pupils included Eduard Marxsen , who in turn later became the teacher of Johannes Brahms .

Some piano compositions by Carl Maria von Bocklet have come down to us. His op. 1 was a variation on a waltz by Anton Diabelli ; this had inspired numerous composers to create variations on their own waltz and published them under the title Vaterländischer Künstlerverein .
