Louis Mitchell
Louis A. Mitchell (* 17th December 1885 in Philadelphia , † 2. September 1957 in Washington, DC ) was an American jazz - drummer and bandleader.
Life
Louis Mitchell was an African American band leader who performed successfully in Europe in the 1910s and 1920s. Mitchell, who began his career in minstrel shows, came to New York City in 1912 with the Southern Symphonists' Quintet . He went to Europe for the first time with Vernon and Irene Castle, and from 1915 appeared in Great Britain on vaudeville stages with the Seven Spades . He had an engagement at Piccadilly Restaurant and toured a variety show called Jordan & Mitchell . Finally he founded his Syncopating Septette and caused a sensation with his drum solos.
In 1918 he returned to New York and was the drummer with James Reese Europe's Clef Club Band . After putting together his own formation, he went to Paris , where he performed in hotels and dance clubs. In 1919/20 Sidney Bechet also played in his band on his UK tour. In the 1920s he and his Jazz Kings had a five-year engagement at the Casino de Paris , which was located in the Rue de Clichy . The members of the composer group Les Six Mitchell and his band, in which Jean Cocteau also helped out as a drummer, also heard there. He recorded for Pathé in 1922/23. Mitchell then ran his own American restaurant, Mitchell’s in Montmartre , where u. a. Lizzy Miles performed. He opened the Music Box with the singer Ada Smith . Mitchell continued to work as a musician and music manager in Paris until he had to return to the United States at the start of World War II .
