Louisburgh ( Irish : Cluain Cearbán - "meadow of buttercups") located south of the Clew Bay in County Mayo in the province of Connacht in Ireland . The Sancta Maria College and the Grace O'Malley Interpretive Center are located in the village .

history

The place was originally laid out according to plan and has retained much of its former appearance to this day. In 1795 the place was founded by the 3rd Earl of Altamount, later 1st Marquess of Sligo , John Denis Browne from Westport to take in Catholic refugees from the north of Ireland who had fled for religious reasons. He named the city in honor of his uncle - Captain Henry Browne - who fought Louisbourg against the French in 1758 . Louisbourg was a fort on Cape Breton Island , Nova Scotia , Canada .

location

Louisburgh is on the Bunowen River , which is known for its salmon population . Ferries to Clare Island and Inishturk leave from Roonagh Pier, about 6 km west of town . There are several beaches in the vicinity that are known for their cleanliness.

To the east of the village is the mountain Croagh Patrick on which Saint Patrick is said to have lived for 40 days. To the west are the Sheaffrey Hills and south to the Mweelrea Mountains.

To the east a road connection (R335) leads via Kilsallagh and Murrisk to Westport , to the south the R335 continues via Cregganbaun , past Lake Doo Lough , over Doo Lough Pass to Delphi (Galway). To the west, another road runs through Killadoon and Kinnadoonhy to end on the coast near Tonakeera Point.

Many Louisburgh people commute to work in nearby Westport and Castlebar .

There are facilities for anglers, surfers, hikers and other leisure activities in the village.

There is also the “Books @ One” bookstore in the village.

Sights and events

The local theater has received a new boost with the establishment of the “ Ceol agus Dráma i gCluain Cearbán ” (Music and Drama in Louisburgh). The group primarily does theater for children and pantomime performances.

Once a year, on the May Bank Holiday weekend, the music festival “Féile Chois Chuan” for traditional music takes place and attracts visitors from home and abroad.
