life and work

Luísa Hanaê Matsushita grew up as the daughter of Japanese immigrants in Campinas in the state of São Paulo . Inspired by her aunt's travels, she wanted to become a stewardess as a child . At the age of 16, she moved to São Paulo to work as an illustrator, and soon afterwards began an internship in the fashion industry , which she kept through various engagements throughout her music career.

In 2003, Luísa's friend Iracema Trevisan invited her to play in a band for fun. Since she had tried the electric guitar for a short time at the age of 13 , she came to the first band meeting with the ambition of becoming a guitarist. Ultimately, she divided Adriano Cintra, the only band member with musical experience, as a singer. Without much expectation, the band called themselves Cansei de Ser Sexy ( Portuguese for “tired of being sexy”) after a quote from Beyoncé that Luísa came across on the Internet. In order to avoid confusion with her band colleague Luíza Sá, she adopted the stage name Lovefoxxx, which is reminiscent of porn.

In 2005 CSS released their debut album on Sub Pop and became an international success with songs co-composed by Matsushita such as Music Is My Hot Hot Sex and Let's Make Love and Listen to Death from Above . The band, which is part of the New Rave, began to perform worldwide and was able to gain a wide audience , especially in England . At the height of the band's popularity, Lovefoxxx lived in London for five years and had a long-term relationship with Klaxons guitarist Simon Taylor-Davis. As a result, three more albums were released and two members left the group. After the end of the relationship with Taylor-Davis, the singer moved back to São Paulo.

Solo career

The extravagant clothing style helped Lovefoxxx CSS to attract even more attention and earned her the reputation of a sex symbol and a fashion icon. In 2006 and 2007 she was voted into the top 10 of NME’s Cool List twice in a row , in 2008 she modeled for Luella Bartley's summer collection and graced the cover of the Brazilian edition of Vogue . A particular trademark of the singer was initially mainly catsuits made of elastane , but she also stated that she had a soft spot for designers like Vivienne Westwood . Indigo Clarke described her style as " punk attitude wrapped up as a lycra-clad doll".

After already working with Primal Scream , she recorded the single A Volta in 2009 with the US DJ collective NASA and two other musicians . A year later she collaborated with the French DJ Kavinsky and sang the title Nightcall with him . The song, co-produced by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo , was featured prominently in the title sequence of the movie thriller Drive . In 2012 she worked with Steve Aoki on his single Heartbreaker .

Apart from her musical career, Matsushita works as a freelance visual artist in New York City .
