Lucy Flores
Lucy Flores (born October 24, 1979 in Glendale , California ) is an American politician from Nevada . She belongs to the Democratic Party .
Flores had 13 siblings. Her father, a mariachi musician, moved the family to Las Vegas from Southern California after two of her brothers were shot dead in gang arguments. Her mother left the family when she was nine years old. After that, she started skipping school and joined a youth gang. At the age of 14, she was arrested after a car chase behind the wheel of a stolen car and spent 10 months in juvenile prison. Her probation officer Leslie Camp, a staunch Republican supporter, supported her in her attempt to stop committing a criminal offense. At the age of 17 she left high school without a degree, but after jobs as a medical assistant and prison clerk, she passed the GED , attended a state-funded community college and received a scholarship to the University of Southern California . After graduating in political science , she studied law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas . During her studies, she built up legal advice for unjustly convicted people. From 2011 to 2015, she represented the constituency where she grew up as a Democratic Party MP in the Nevada State Assembly . Among other things, she introduced a draft law that should enable victims of domestic violence to terminate rental and lease contracts early in order to break off contact with the perpetrator. The law came into force in June 2013. In 2013, during a debate about additional school programs, she stated that she had had an abortion at the age of 16. After that, she received a plethora of insults and multiple death threats.
In 2014, she ran for the post of Deputy Governor of Nevada. She received the necessary funds of $ 350,000 mainly through support from EMILY's List , an organization that supports progressive women in American politics. She lost the election to Republican Mark Hutchison . In 2015, she announced her candidacy for Congress in Nevada's fourth constituency.
She supports Bernie Sanders' candidacy during the 2016 US presidency primaries . EMILY's List then withdrew her support and instead promoted her internal party opponent Susie Lee. However, a fundraising appeal by Sanders in their favor raised nearly $ 600,000 for their campaign.
She has been a board member of Our Revolution , an organization founded by Sanders, since September 2016 and was appointed by Sanders as a member of the DNC's Unity Reform Commission .
In March 2019, in an article for The Cut magazine, she wrote that Joe Biden had behaved inappropriately towards her at a campaign event in 2014 to support her application for the post of deputy governor by pounding her hair I took my mouth and kissed the back of the head. She did not make the allegations public at the time because she did not know who to turn to. Biden said that he believed he had never behaved wrongly, but that he would listen to the allegations with due respect.
