Landgrave Ludwig von Hessen-Philippsthal

Ludwig von Hessen-Philippsthal (born October 8, 1766 in Philippsthal , † February 16, 1816 in Naples ) from the House of Hesse was a paraged Landgrave of Hesse-Philippsthal .

Life

Ludwig was a son of Landgrave Wilhelm von Hessen-Philippsthal (1726-1810) from his marriage to Ulrike Eleonore (1732-1795), daughter of Landgrave Wilhelm von Hessen-Philippsthal-Barchfeld .

Initially in the Dutch service, he entered the service of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in 1791 . There he became lieutenant general, court marshal, governor of Caserta and inspector of all border fortresses.

In 1806 he was entrusted with the defense of Gaeta by Queen Maria Karolina (see also General Felix von Schumacher ). During the French siege of Gaeta by André Masséna , he offered bitter resistance. He refused to hand over the fortress with the words "Gaeta is not Ulm and Philippsthal is not Mack ". Severely wounded, he was brought to Sicily on an English frigate and his successor finally handed over the fortress.

After his recovery he was appointed captain general. In 1810 he followed his father as paraged Landgrave of Hessen-Philippsthal. He accompanied Queen Maria Karolina in 1814 on her way to the Congress of Vienna . In Philippsthal he compared himself with his brother and (from 1813) successor as Landgrave of Hesse-Philippsthal, Ernst Konstantin .

Ludwig died in Naples and was buried in the fortress of Gaeta.

Marriage and offspring

Ludwig married on January 21, 1791 in Süsteren Countess Marie Franziska Berghe von Trips (* August 8, 1771; † 1805), daughter of the chief hunter Count Franz Alphons Berghe von Trips. The marriage took place without the parents' knowledge. The marriage was not recognized by Ludwig's parents, and he also had to leave the Dutch service because the officers were prohibited from marrying Catholics. Marie Franziska was able to arrange services for her husband in Naples due to her family connections. Marie Franziska later acted as chief stewardess to Queen Maria Karolina.

Ludwig had the following children from his marriage:

  • Karoline (* January 13, 1793; † 1872) ⚭ December 13, 1810 (closed 1814) Comte Ferdinand de la Ville sur Illon (* May 4, 1777 - March 1, 1865) (daughter: Friederike Napoleone (* 12. October 1810))
  • Wilhelm (born August 9, 1798; † 1799)
