Life
Ludwig Dittweiler began his training as a decorative painter at the Hoftheater Karlsruhe and later continued it with Josef Mühldorfer at the Nationaltheater Mannheim . In 1857 he was briefly a student of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer at the Karlsruhe Art Academy . He then worked as a theater painter at the Karlsruhe Court Theater. Influenced by the Baden painter Ferdinand Keller , he created elaborate sets for performances such as Carmen , Der Freischütz , The Ring of the Nibelung and Tannhäuser . His decorations for Sleeping Beauty showed a view of the inner courtyard of Heidelberg Castle . Similar architectural motifs can also be found in his paintings and watercolors, which Dittweiler successfully showed at exhibitions from 1870 onwards. Interiors that were created during various trips to Tyrol, Northern Italy, Rome and Venice can be found repeatedly in his work. The Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe owns the works from Maulbronn Monastery and View into the Cappella San Isidoro in San Marco in Venice .
