Ludwig Kohl (born April 14, 1746 in Prague ; † June 18, 1821 there ) was a Czech-Austrian painter, draftsman and etcher.

Ludwig Kohl was a son of the engraver Anton Kohl and the grandson of the sculptor Hieronymus Kohl . He graduated from the Piarist high school on the Lesser Town in Prague , where he was a student of Gelasius Dobner . At the same time he learned painting privately with Norbert Grund . He became the first art teacher to his brother Clemens Kohl (1754–1807) , who was eight years his junior . From 1766 he continued his studies at the Vienna Art Academy with Jacob Matthias Schmutzer and in 1769 became a full member of the academy. In 1770 he returned to Prague, from 1775 until his death he taught drawing at the kk Haupt-Normalschule and had an influence on the younger generation of painters. In 1818 he was awarded the great gold medal of civil merit.

Two different periods can be distinguished in Kohl's work: first of all, the last influences of the baroque can be observed in him, and later those of Viennese classicism.

Ludwig Kohl mainly painted and drew exterior and interior views of existing or imagined monumental buildings. Often his brother Clemens helped him to convert his templates into copperplate engravings. He also painted pictures with historical and sacred subjects.

His proposals for the completion of St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague Castle are noteworthy .
