Ludwig Medicus
Ludwig Medicus (born December 1, 1847 in Kaiserslautern , † October 11, 1915 in Würzburg ) was a German chemist and pharmacist .
life and work
Medicus was assistant to Adolph Strecker at the University of Würzburg. In his habilitation thesis from 1875 he derives the structures of the purines known at the time ( uric acid , xanthine , guanine , hypoxanthine ) and the purine alkaloids caffeine and theobromine . These structures derived from him were only recognized more than twenty years later after long disputes with Emil Fischer . Medicus is called the first representative of theoretical chemistry.
His grandfather was Ludwig Walrad Medicus , his great-grandfather the botanist Friedrich Casimir Medicus .
