Franz Ludwig Paul Noster (born October 9, 1859 in Friedeberg (Neumark) , † May 29, 1910 in Berlin ) was a German court portrait painter .

Life

Ludwig Noster was born as the youngest son of master carpenter Gotthilf Heinrich Noster and his wife Anna Helene, née Meier, on October 9, 1859 in Friedeberg / Neumark. He attended the Progymnasium in his hometown and, at the age of 15, started his apprenticeship at his father's request. Even while he was learning the carpentry trade, he was already thinking more about the paintings that he had grown fond of , which his father described as an art without a job. Only after persuading Chamberlain von Brand from Lauchstädt (Friedeberg district) did the father change his mind and let him become a painter according to his wishes. At the age of 17, Ludwig Noster moved to the art academy in Berlin . His teachers were professors Paul Thumann , Otto Knille and especially Karl Gussow . Professor Gussow later advised him to go to Düsseldorf and made recommendations to Professors Wilhelm Sohn and Eduard Gebhardt . In Düsseldorf he studied for a year at the art academy and from there went to Holland . Noster was one of the first German painters to paint Dutch interiors. After a year of study his financial means were exhausted and he returned to Friedeberg / Neumark to paint pictures from his studies. Based on his first successes, Noster moved to Berlin in 1885. The director of the Berlin Art Academy Anton von Werner was so enthusiastic about Noster's mastery (also astonished that the painter was such a young man) that he recommended him to the court marshal of Kaiser Wilhelm I , which gave him orders and upstairs in the imperial palace Atelier received.

In 1886 Noster set up his own artist's home with a studio and on June 4, 1886 married his childhood sweetheart Anna Elisabeth Stabler (born September 30, 1861 in Friedeberg (Neumark) ). In the following years, on the advice of older colleagues, Noster chose his wife several times as the motif for his pictures. Thanks to his lovely interiors, Noster soon gained a special reputation as a genre painter . Many of his genre pictures testify that he had his sense of color and understanding of picturesque interiors in the Dutch style.

After his death several of his Dutch paintings were in private hands in galleries in Berlin, Leipzig, Russia, England and America. Noster's main work, however, was in the field of portrait painting , especially the execution of portraits of the German Emperor. For years he was the artist from whose workshop the numerous portraits of the emperors on behalf of the monarch emerged. One of these numerous pictures depicting the emperor in life-size was used in the artistic design of a gable wall of the main meeting room in the newly built government building in Frankfurt (Oder) , today's main building of the European University Viadrina .

Over the years, Ludwig Noster gained the favor of the emperor, who granted him various meetings and appointed him court portrait painter in 1896. He continued to paint portraits , such as those of Prince Heinrich of Prussia , the Duke of Anhalt-Dessau , the President of the Reichstag, Count Udo zu Stolberg-Wernigerode , the German Vice Chancellor Arthur Graf von Posadowsky-Wehner , the cannon king Alfred Krupp , the Dessau Minister Korsig, the poet Seydel, the Countess Hohenau, wife von Brand auf Tankow (Friedeberg district), his patroness and many others. On October 18, 1899, he signed the Golden Book of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg .

In 1907 Noster was appointed professor . As he was drawn to Holland again and again, he bought a piece of land in Edam on Lake Zuydersee in 1906 and set up an idyllic artist's estate to pursue his passion undisturbed. Here, among others, his last, much-admired Dutch painting, Psalm 90, verse 10 , was made. Tied to bed due to a severe kidney disease, he returned to Berlin, where he died on May 29, 1910. In the evening, after the funeral service, his body was transferred to his hometown Friedeberg / Neumark, which donated an honorary grave to its honorary citizen. This adorns an artistically beautiful monument made of Carrara marble , a magnificent female figure, Die Mrauer, supported on a pedestal decorated with the portrait of the artist. Noster's wife died on September 9, 1939 in their hometown.
