Ludwig Refinger (* 1510, † 1549 in Munich ) was a German painter of the Renaissance .

Life

Nothing is known about its origin, Ingolstadt or Röfingen are believed to be the place of birth . A year of birth cannot be precisely determined either, assumptions range from 1505 to 1515.

From 1528 he learned to paint in the workshop of Wolfgang Muelich in Munich, together with Barthel Beham and Hans Mielich . He then worked in Munich and Landshut .

After Barthel Beham died in 1540, Ludwig Refinger married his widow and adopted the children. From this marriage three more children were born. After Ludwig's death, the widow married again, this time the humanist Simon Schaidenreisser . Two of Ludwig's children - Bartelme (presumably an adopted son from his wife's first marriage) colored the large map of Bavaria by Philipp Apian , and Karl , who was active in Burghausen - also became painters.

He worked alongside Albrecht Altdorfer , Jörg Breu , Melchior Feselen and others on a history cycle with 16 paintings for Duke Wilhelm IV , including Horatius Cocles holding the enemy troops of the Etruscan king Porsenna back from the city of Rome and Manlius Torquatus' victory after the duel with his works to the Gauls .

From 1540 to 1543 he worked for Duke Ludwig X. in the Landshut city residence , where he made a number of frescoes and stained glass. There he painted, among other things, the frescoes in the Star Room and a series of pictures with motifs similar to those from the history cycle of Wilhelm IV ( Marcus Curtius , Horatius Cocles ).
