Ludwig Saxer

Ludwig Saxer (born November 26, 1869 in Carlsburg , † May 3, 1957 in Hamburg ) was a German rear admiral in the Reichsmarine .

Life

Saxer joined the Imperial Navy as a cadet on April 13, 1889 . On May 17, 1892, he was promoted to sub-lieutenant without a patent. He received the patent for this rank on October 23, 1893. On April 8, 1895 he was promoted to lieutenant in the sea (renamed Oberleutnant zur See on January 1, 1899). In the period 1 October 1898 until June 1901, the headquarters company of it was sailors artillery - detachments Kiautschou allocated. During this service he was promoted to lieutenant captain on January 23, 1901 . In June 1901 he returned to Germany and became chief of the 1st torpedo boat division . From October 1, 1905 to September 28, 1908, Saxer was then Head of Department in the Reichsmarineamt . From September 29, 1908 to September 14, 1910, Saxer served as first officer on the ships of the line Hanover and Westphalen . In the meantime he had been promoted to Korvettenkapitän on March 9, 1907 . From September 15, 1910 to July 16, 1912, Saxer served as 1st Admiral Staff Officer with the staff of the 1st Squadron - during this time he was promoted to frigate captain (April 10, 1911). On January 7, 1913, Saxer traveled again to China and on February 19, 1913 became Chief of Staff in the Kiautschou Governorate . Before that, on January 27, 1913, he had been promoted to captain of the sea . In his position as chief of staff, Saxer also experienced the outbreak of World War I and took part in the defense of Tsingtau . After the conquest of Tsingtao by Japanese forces he came in November 1914 in Japanese captivity .

Saxer was released from captivity at the end of December 1919. He left Japan on March 25, 1920 together with other senior officers on the steamer Nankai Maru and arrived in Germany on May 27, 1920. By order of January 30, 1920 he received seniority from January 21, 1920 the character of Rear Admiral. A short time later, on July 15, 1920, he was retired from active service.

After his release, Saxer lived in Berlin, but after the death of his wife he moved to Hamburg, where he died in 1957.

After returning to Germany in 1901, Saxer married Käthe Ruperti (1870–1943). The marriage had two children. The Saxers family spent the First World War in Beijing and Shanghai .
