history

Ludwigshof was named as Vorwerk and Schäferei Ruppitz until 1846 and was first mentioned in a document on September 30, 1381. Ludwig Franz von Breitenbauch had the outer bailey of Ranis Castle demolished and the Ruppitz suburb converted into a modern manor, with an Italian-style manor house and barns that were accessible above.

Until the land reform, the manor was owned by the von Breitenbuch family and ran herd book cattle breeding. In 1947 the milking school was moved from Jena Zwätze to Ludwigshof in the state estate with the state institute for animal breeding. In 1952, the state institute was assigned to the council of the Gera district as a research center and technical school for animal breeding, and what is now the Volksgut in 1963 to the Association of Nationally Owned Animal Breeding Goods. From 1969 the property was managed by the Orlatal cooperative association based in Oppurg , later by the Agricultural Industry Association (AIV) Neustadt (Orla).
