Lueg (mountain)

The Lueg is a hill with a well-known viewpoint in the municipality of Affoltern in Emmental , Switzerland .

The so-called Heiligenlandpöli forms at around 890  m above sea level. M. is the highest point of the community and used to have a so-called Hohwacht here , on which an alarm fire could be lit in the event of war.

The Lueg pass connects the Bernese Mittelland ( Wynigen ) and the Emmental (Affoltern im Emmental)

Cavalry Memorial

In 1921 a memorial for the Bernese cavalrymen who died of the Spanish flu in 1918 was erected here by master bricklayer Fritz Aeschlimann from Rinderbach near Rüegsau based on designs by Karl Indermühle . The memorial at this historical location (high watch for alarm fire, mobilization area) is intended to commemorate the soldiers who lost their lives during the “service to the fatherland” ( active service ). The first wave of the Spanish flu in July 1918 claimed up to 35 victims per day among those on duty in the Swiss Army.

The monument consists of a mighty stone column with six bas-reliefs reminiscent of the Tower of the Winds . The inscription reads:

In memory of the Bernese cavalrymen who died in the service of the fatherland during the border occupation 1914-1918 and in the security service of November 1918. Erected in 1921 by Bern. Cavalry Officers Society and the Bern. Cavalry units. In eternal loyalty for the Bernese country, for the Swiss country, for the fatherland. "

In 1920 the architect and sculptor Erwin Friedrich Baumann actually received first prize in the competition for the monument. However, his project was not carried out because he refused to attach a relief by the sculptor Karl Hänny that was in his eyes unworthy . At the inauguration on October 2, 1921, around 20,000 people and 2000 mounted cavalrymen gathered on the Heiligenlandbühl near the Luegdenkmal.

The memorial is preserved by the Lueg Foundation established by the Bernese Cavalry Officers Association BKOG in 1932 , was restored in 2006 and is a listed building. At the annual Luegschiessen, the dead are commemorated with a wreath-laying ceremony.

Memorial stones

The Heiligenlandpöli offers a magnificent view of the Bernese Alps and the Emmental . Two more memorial stones remember the pastor Eduard Henzi from Hasle near Burgdorf , who created the panorama picture of the Heiligenlandhubel comprising 300 mountain peaks , as well as the one from 2003 for the dissolution of Inf Rgt 16 with soldiers from the Emmental and Oberaargau .
