Luigi Ventura (born December 9, 1944 in Borgosatollo , Province of Brescia , Italy ) is an Italian clergyman , emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop and diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

Luigi Ventura received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Brescia on June 14, 1969 through the Bishop of Brescia, Luigi Morstabilini .

On March 25, 1995 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To Titular Archbishop of Equilium and ordered him to the Apostolic Nuncio in Ivory Coast , in Burkina Faso and Niger . Since January 2019, the public prosecutor in Paris has been investigating Ventura on suspicion of sexual assault, which had become conspicuous at the New Year's reception of Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo . After the first results of the investigation were available, the Vatican lifted the diplomatic immunity of the ambassador at the request of the French public prosecutor on July 8, 2019. The Vatican spokesman said Ventura was ready to cooperate fully with the French judicial authorities from the start. A victim who had been manipulated immorally met with Vatican officials in Rome and also sued the nuncio in the Vatican. Pope Francisaccepted Ventura's resignation as Apostolic Nuncio in France in mid-December 2019; Ventura's age was given as the reason for the resignation.

The trial of Ventura in Paris began on November 10, 2020 in the defendant's absence. In France, in the meantime, other men had also come forward claiming they had been sexually molested by Ventura , in several cases at public events and / or in front of witnesses. On December 16, 2020, Ventura was sentenced in absentia to eight months suspended prison sentence.
