Luigi di Canossa

Luigi Cardinal di Canossa SJ (born April 20, 1809 in Verona , † March 12, 1900 there ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

biography

Luigi di Canossa came from the Italian noble family Canossa . His parents were Bonifacio di Canossa and Francesca de'Castiglioni. He attended elementary school in Verona. On March 25, 1837, he joined the religious community of the Jesuits and two years later in 1839 took the religious vows . After his ordination , which took place in Modena in 1841 , he worked as a lecturer at the Jesuit seminaries , but was also responsible as a preacher in various Italian cities. Most recently he was head of the seminary in Reggio nell'Emilia .

In 1847 he resigned from the Jesuit order after an illness and with permission. Di Canossa was incardinated in the diocese of Verona and in 1857 appointed canon of the cathedral of Verona. He also directed the diocesan library. On August 24, 1861, di Canossa was appointed ambassador of his diocese to Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary .

Just a month later, on September 30, 1861, di Canossas was appointed bishop of the diocese of Verona. The episcopal ordination donated him on January 23, 1862 Benedetto Riccabona de Reinchenfels , the then Bishop of Trento ; Co- consecrators were Manfredo Giovanni Battista Bellati , Bishop of Ceneda , and Giovanni Corti , Bishop of Mantua . In 1868, Bishop di Canossa attended the First Vatican Council . Immediately afterwards di Canossa was to be appointed Archbishop of Bologna , but he refused his transfer because of his ties to Verona.

In the consistory of March 12, 1877 Pope Pius IX. di Canossa as a cardinal priest in the college of cardinals and assigned him to the titular church of San Marcello on March 20 of the same year . A year later di Canossa was one of the participants in the conclave of 1878 , in which Leo XIII. was elected Pope.

After a stroke that Cardinal di Canossa suffered in 1891, he had to severely limit his pastoral activities. From July 1899 until his death eight months later, di Canossa was the oldest living cardinal in the Church.

Cardinal Luigi di Canossa died shortly before his 91st birthday. Today he is buried in the church of San Zeno Maggiore in Verona.
