Luise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (1756–1808)
Luise von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg (born March 9, 1756 in Roda ; † January 1, 1808 in Ludwigslust ) was a princess of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and, by marriage, Duchess of Mecklenburg in the state of Mecklenburg-Schwerin .
Life
Luise was the daughter of Prince Johann August von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg (1704–1767) from his marriage to Luise (1726–1773), daughter of Count Heinrich I. Reuss zu Schleiz .
On May 31, 1775, she married the Hereditary Grand Duke of Mecklenburg at Friedenstein Castle in Gotha , who in 1785 as Friedrich Franz I became reigning duke in the Schwerin region and was raised to Grand Duke of Mecklenburg in 1815 . The marriage was described as happy.
When Duchess Luise died, she was buried in the Luisengruft built for her , the Louisen mausoleum behind Ludwigslust Palace . There are two sandstone lions in front of the crypt and the word “Louisen” in gold-plated letters above the entrance.
