The Luzon Strait or Strait of Luzon is a waterway that connects the Philippine Sea with the South China Sea between Taiwan and the Philippine main island of Luzón .
geography
The waterway is 320 km wide. There are two groups of islands in it: the Babuyan Islands and the islands of the Batanes Province .
The street is divided into three channels:
- The Babuyan Canal separates Luzón from the Babuyan Islands,
- the Balintang Channel the Babuyan Islands from the Batan Islands
- and Bashi Strait the Batan Islands of Taiwan .
At the exit of the Luzon Strait to the Philippine Sea lies the small island of Palaui , on which there is a 116 year old lighthouse. The Abulug and Cagayan rivers flow into the Luzon Strait on the southern coast .
economy
The Luzon Strait is an important link for shipping and communication. Many freighters from America use the route on their way to the main sea ports of East Asia. The Luzon Strait is criss-crossed by many submarine cables that provide telephone and data connections to China , Hong Kong , Taiwan , Japan, and South Korea .
history
The Luzon Strait was part of the Japanese invasion route in December 1941. On December 8th, due to the date line on the same day as the attack on Pearl Harbor , they landed on Batanes .
On December 10th, they occupied Camiguin in northern Mindanaos and landed in Aparri , Luzon on the same day .
In the following years, US submersibles chased Japanese convoys that crossed the strait on their way from the East Indies to Japan.
