Lynard Stewart (born May 12, 1976 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is a retired American basketball player . After completing his studies, Stewart initially played for a short time in various countries as a professional, before playing in the British Basketball League (BBL) for a longer period from 2001 and celebrating his greatest successes there. Stewart was named “ Most Valuable Player ” (MVP) of the BBL in 2008 , before ending his active career in the BBL two years later. Stewart then coached a high school basketball team in his hometown.

Career

Stewart was a successful high school basketball player in his hometown but did not go to college like his two older brothers Larry , who had a professional career in the NBA , and Stephen, who later worked as a college basketball coach, at Coppin State University but to Temple University in Philadelphia. There he played for the college team Owls in the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) of the NCAA . In 1995 and 1996 you lost the final of the championship tournament of the A-10 as in the two previous years against the Minutemen of the University of Massachusetts . In 1998 they retired as the winner of the Eastern Division of the A-10 like a year earlier in the semi-finals of the championship tournament. In the national NCAA finals , you never got past the second round.

After Stewart was not considered in the NBA Draft , he played at his first professional station in the Chinese Basketball Association for the Ducks from Beijing . After a year he went to Europe and played in the second half of the season for the Czech champions Mlékárna Kunín from Nový Jičín . Although this won the national cup competition, but could not defend his championship title in the final series. Then Stewart was to play in the "National Rookie League" (NRL) with a team from his hometown and in Israel , before he finally played in the "International Basketball Association" (IBA) for the Siouxland Bombers from Sioux City . However, the Bombers stopped their game operations at the end of the season, while the remaining teams of the IBA found acceptance into the re-established Continental Basketball Association .

After Stewart had won the championship with the Potros de la Villa Francisca in the Dominican Republic in the summer of 2001 , he came to the Sharks from Sheffield in the BBL in the 2001/02 season . The Sharks could not repeat their previous success as winners of the "Northern Conference" of the BBL and came second behind the Chester Jets , who then also won the final game of the play-offs of the BBL against the Sharks and thus all the titles of the BBL this season. In the following season, the Sharks won with Stewart the regular season of the BBL, which was now played again without Conferences, but in the play-offs they lost in the semifinals against the eventual title winner Scottish Rocks . In the following season, they won the final game of the first ever BBL Cup against this opponent , which had replaced the traditional “National Cup” as a league cup, which was now played without the BBL teams. As second in the regular season you could defeat the Chester Jets in the final of the play-offs.

In 2004 Stewart went to the Towers from London for two seasons . Here he could not celebrate any particular success except for a final participation in the BBL Cup 2005/06, which was lost to the Newcastle Eagles, who dominated that season. After the Towers had to be deregistered from the game after the 2005/06 season, Stewart went to the Belgian Ethias League to the club from Bree , where he was again looked after by his compatriot Chris Finch , his former coach at the Sheffield Sharks. With this club he could not build on his successes from previous years and while Finch moved within the league, Stewart returned to the BBL, where he signed a contract with the Eagles from Newcastle-upon-Tyne . In the 2007/08 season they lost the finals in the two cup competitions BBL Cup and BBL Trophy, but won the regular season of the BBL, in which Stewart was awarded the BBL MVP. In the play-offs, however, they only reached fourth place. In the following season, in which his compatriot and teammate Trey Moore was named MVP, they won all competitions of the BBL except for the BBL Cup. The title in the BBL Trophy could be defended in the 2009/10 season, while in the play-offs as the main round first in the semi-final series against the eventual title winner Everton Tigers was eliminated. Stewart then retired as a player and a year later coached a high school basketball team in his hometown of Philadelphia.
