Vegetative characteristics

Lyonia ligustrina is a shrub and reaches heights of up to four meters. It has long rhizomes that can produce new plants up to 4 meters away. The branches have a longitudinally furrowed bark .

The leaves are shed - depending on the variety - or are evergreen. The simple leaf blade is up to 10.5 centimeters long and about 5 centimeters wide, narrow to broadly elliptical, obovate or ovate.

Generative characteristics

The small flowers are white. A small, dry capsule fruit is formed.

Their common English-language names come from the fact that, unlike other heather plants such as blueberries or huckleberries, they do not produce soft, juicy, edible fruits, but hard, dry capsule fruits.

Site conditions

Lyonia ligustrina is a plant species that is common in many dry and moist biotope types . It inhabits savannas , moors , forests, pocosins and breaks . Lyonia ligustrina is fire- tolerant in that it produces buds and branches from the rhizomes after the aboveground parts have been destroyed. For this reason, it is also “at home” in fire-determined ecosystems such as pine heather .
