Lyons ( Lyonia ) are a genus of plants within the heather family (Ericaceae). The 36 or so species are common in Asia and North America.

Vegetative characteristics

Lyonia species are deciduous or evergreen shrubs and trees . Some have rhizomes . The leaves are arranged in a spiral.

Generative characteristics

The inflorescences are lateral. The flowers are typically white, occasionally red. There are fruit capsules formed.

Fossil evidence

From the Middle Miocene strata in the area around Fasterholt near Silkeborg in Jutland ( Denmark ) 37 fossil fruits of the extinct species Lyonia danica have been described.

Systematics

The genus Lyonia was established by Thomas Nuttall .
