Lyons ( Lyonia ) are a genus of plants within the heather family (Ericaceae). The 36 or so species are common in Asia and North America.

Vegetative characteristics
Lyonia species are deciduous or evergreen shrubs and trees . Some have rhizomes . The leaves are arranged in a spiral.
Generative characteristics
The inflorescences are lateral. The flowers are typically white, occasionally red. There are fruit capsules formed.
Fossil evidence
From the Middle Miocene strata in the area around Fasterholt near Silkeborg in Jutland ( Denmark ) 37 fossil fruits of the extinct species Lyonia danica have been described.
Systematics
The genus Lyonia was established by Thomas Nuttall .
- Lyonia ferruginea (Walter) Nutt. : It only thrives at altitudes of 0 to 100 meters in the southeastern US states of Florida , Georgia and South Carolina .
- Lyonia fruticosa (Michx.) GSTorr.
- Lyonia ligustrina (L.) DC. : There are two varieties in the eastern United States.
- Lyonia lucida (Lam.) K. Koch : It occurs in the southeastern US states of Alabama , Florida, Georgia, North Carolina , South Carolina, Virginia and Mississippi .
- Lyonia mariana (L.) D.Don : It occurs in the central to eastern US states of New Jersey , New York , Pennsylvania , Connecticut , Missouri , Oklahoma , Arkansas , Delaware , Florida, Georgia, Louisiana , Maryland , North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Texas
