The motor ship Munich is a passenger ship on Lake Constance .
history
After the Second World War there were no large motor ships in the port of Constance . In order to cope with the increasing number of passengers, the Deutsche Bundesbahn, as the operator of the German ships of the White Fleet at the time , commissioned the Kressbronn Bodan shipyard with a new building. The three-deck motor ship ordered was to become a sister ship to the Friedrichshafen based Stuttgart and replace the Hohentwiel , which was to be retired at the end of the 1961 season. During the construction period there was an accident at the shipyard on November 18, 1961, which delayed completion by several months. Therefore, the Hohentwiel was reactivated for another season.
On August 1, 1962, the new ship was put into service. It was given the name “Munich”, previously used by the former Rupprecht , which was retired in 1958 . It is named after the capital of the state of Bavaria, which borders Lake Constance.
commitment
From 1962 to 2005, the Munich was used on course lines on the Obersee , and like the Graf Zeppelin, it was also used for special trips. In recent years, the Munich has been moored at berth 3 in the Konstanz harbor during the winter breaks, and serves as the location of stalls at the Konstanz Christmas market.
Since the 2006 season, the Munich has been used on the Überlinger See as a replacement for the decommissioned motor ship Überlingen . In the winter of 2007/2008, the Munich was overhauled and modernized in BSB's own shipyard in Friedrichshafen , and another accident occurred, albeit with far less serious consequences than in 1961: On February 15, 2008, the insulation material in the engine compartment ignited, but it was quickly under control could be brought.
