history

The actual founder of steam shipping on Lake Constance and thus also the Lake Constance shipping company was the consul of the United States of America in Bordeaux , Edward Church . After that in May 1823 the Lake Geneva the first Swiss steamboat Guillaume Tell had built, he was from where Geneva originating Constance banker and textile manufacturer David Macaire d'Hoggner (1775-1845) the Stuttgarter publisher Baron Johann Friedrich von Cotta presented. Cotta, in turn, recommended Church and his proposal to start steam shipping on Lake Constance to King Wilhelm I of Württemberg . Being impressed by this, King Church immediately commissioned the building of a steamship in Friedrichshafen . For this purpose, the establishment of the Friedrichshafener Dampfbootgesellschaft was initiated, in which King Wilhelm I took over a 50% share. On November 10, 1824, the Württemberg ship Wilhelm made its first satisfactory test drive and on December 1 of the same year it was put into regular service as the first steamship on Lake Constance . From then on, it took over the transport of people and goods between Friedrichshafen and Rorschach / Romanshorn . The steam boat company was taken over by the Royal Württemberg State Railways in 1854 .

Equipped with a corresponding permit from the Grand Duke of Baden , the steamship company for Lake Constance and the Rhine in Constance was founded on July 12, 1830 under the presidency of David Macaire d'Hoggner. On November 30, 1831, the company was able to successfully commission its first ship, the smooth-deck steamer Leopold . The following year, the second ship, the smooth-deck steamer Helvetia , went into service. After 1854 (Württemberg) the state railways of the federal states took over shipping, Bavaria and Baden followed in 1863. Excursion shipping began in 1860, motor shipping began in 1920. In 1920, shipping on Lake Constance in the three German states was subordinated to the Deutsche Reichsbahn . In 1944, during the Second World War , shipping on Lake Constance had to be stopped. After the end of the war, the fleet was confiscated by French authorities in 1945; all Lake Constance shipping courses could not be resumed until 1948. In 1952 the fleet was taken over by the Deutsche Bundesbahn , after 1994 Deutsche Bahn AG .

In 1996 the Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe were spun off from Deutsche Bahn AG as a subsidiary "BSB GmbH". In December 2002, the BSB and the associated port and land areas were acquired by Stadtwerke Konstanz GmbH. Since May 15, 2003 they have been operating as “Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe GmbH”, a subsidiary of the Stadtwerke Konstanz GmbH group of companies. The BSB are members of the United Shipping Companies for Lake Constance and the Rhine (VSU) , an association of the four large shipping companies, which, under the leadership of the BSB management, coordinates the timetables and tariffs of the members.

The object of the company is the transport of people and goods on Lake Constance and all business directly or indirectly connected to the ship operation, such as services in the field of hydraulic engineering . This includes the renewal of pier coverings , maintenance work in the harbor basin or the ramming of dolphins . Furthermore, the takeover of BSB required the establishment of Bodensee-Hafengesellschaft mbH (BHG), also a wholly-owned subsidiary of Stadtwerke Konstanz GmbH. Your task is to manage and utilize your own property or water.

Together with SBS Schifffahrt AG based in Romanshorn , the Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe operate the hourly ferry connection between Friedrichshafen and Romanshorn all year round . The so-called “Lake Constance ferry ” can be used not only by motor vehicles but also by pedestrians and cyclists.

(Although the Konstanz – Meersburg car ferry is part of the core business of Stadtwerke Konstanz, it is run independently from the Lake Constance shipping company.)

Scheduled shipping

The white fleet of the Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe connects the most important seaside towns and excursion destinations from April to mid-October. With the maiden voyage of Überlingen on June 19 and 20, 2010, the BSB fleet was expanded by two new passenger ships within four years. Another ship of the shipping company is the Lindau , which went into service in 2006 .

fleet

The fleet currently includes 13 motor ships with various home ports and two motor ferries:

Motor ships

The motor ships Baden , Karlsruhe and Swabia , which date from 1935 and 1937, are almost considered to be old-timers. Large sums of money have been invested in them in recent years to preserve their classic style and charm. The motor ships Stuttgart and Munich built in the early 1960s have also been completely renovated inside and out in recent years. As a result, they provide good technical operation as well as comfort and safety for the passengers. Other motor ships are the Reichenau , Konstanz and Uhldingen . The ships, whose renovation needs and whose maintenance and fuel costs are increasing sharply, are gradually being replaced by new, comfortable ships that are considerably cheaper to maintain. The Graf Zeppelin was built in 1989. Queen Katharina was put into service in 1994. In July 2006 the Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe put the 500-passenger ship Lindau into operation. In June 2010, another new ship was put into service: the 700-person three-deck ship Überlingen has since strengthened the White Fleet.

shipyard

The Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe operate their own shipyard in Friedrichshafen , but without shipbuilding. The shipyard is located directly on the other side of the ferry service at the Friedrichshafen – Romanshorn ferry terminal. The area in the best exposed location on the promenade has around 40,000 square meters. Here, especially after the season on the lake, extensive repair and overhaul work is carried out on the ships by more than 30 employees in the winter, working with up to 40 external companies. In the summer months there are five or six employees.

Monument protection

Four ships of Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe GmbH (BSB) were contractually classified as cultural monuments on June 4, 2014 "for the permanent preservation of the ships" : the former work ship Möve (originally a " cargo glider ", built in 1877), the motor ships Baden and Swabia and the work ship Friedrichshafen .
