The motor boat Reichenau is on the Lake traffic forming liner of Lake Constance Schiffsbetriebe (BSB).
history
The German Federal Railroad (DB) commissioned the Bodan shipyard in Kressbronn on Lake Constance with the construction of another ship of the Friedrichshafen type , whose flat shape enables the old Rhine bridge in Constance to be passed and river routes such as the Old Rhine to be sailed at medium water levels .
The ship was put into service in 1961 under the name Reichenau . It replaced the Reichenau motorboat in the Konstanz home port and was initially used on scheduled services between Konstanz and Radolfzell . Until 1973 the Reichenau was used in winter train traffic between Constance and Meersburg .
Later she was responsible for the ferry operation on the submarine course between Radolfzell, Iznang and the island of Reichenau . Before moving into her home port in Radolfzell, the roof of the wheelhouse had to be removed, the windows folded down and the radar mast put in place every time the water level was high, before the ship could cross the old Rhine bridge.
In 1996 the Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe were privatized as a subsidiary "BSB GmbH" of Deutsche Bahn AG . In winter 2000/2001, the Reichenau was overhauled and modernized in BSB's own shipyard in Friedrichshafen . The BSB and its ships have been part of the Konstanz municipal utilities since 2003 .
In September 2005, the ship was the object of a large-scale fire and oil service exercise for fire-fighting train A and the oil service train of the Radolfzell Volunteer Fire Brigade on Lake Zell between Radolfzell and Iznang. The ship itself has fixed and mobile fire pumps that can be used to reach any point on the ship.
At the end of November 2010 it was announced that the BSB intends to build a new ship by 2014 to replace the Reichenau and to carry around 300 passengers.
Until the end of the 2016 season, the Reichenau was used on scheduled trips for the White Fleet on the Untersee between Radolfzell, the island of Reichenau and Konstanz. After a thorough overhaul at the shipyard workshop in Konstanz, the smallest ship of the BSB will in future operate on the Überlinger See, the new home port is Uhldingen. Instead of a new building, the home port of Radolfzell is taken over by the much larger motor ship Stadt Radolfzell , as the former Queen Katharina is now called.
