The Überlingen is the newest passenger ship operated by Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe GmbH (BSB) on Lake Constance . It is the shipping company's second new ship in four years. The ship was christened on June 19, 2010, before that it was named MS 2010 or MS Neubau . The maiden voyage took place on June 19 and 20, 2010. On July 3, 2010 the Überlingen was put into operation and began regular service on the Überlinger See .
Building history
After the BSB was forced to modernize its fleet within 30 years due to the amendment of the Rhine Ship Inspection Regulations (RheinSchuO) from 2004 due to the strict safety requirements, the small Lindau was put into service in July 2005 as the first new ship , named after its home port. As for fleet renewal every four years, a ship must be laid down on the plan of the BSB saw five years ago before that 2010 again a large passenger ship in operation is that as the then discarded Ueberlingen in Lake Überlingen is to be used in class service .
The final decision was made in mid-2008, following a Europe-wide tender for the contract, Österreichische Schiffswerften AG (ÖSWAG) in Linz was awarded the contract in November 2008. In June 2009 the Überlingen was laid down there as MS 2010 and assembled up to the main deck. In autumn 2009, it was broken down into ten individual segments and transported as a heavy load to the shipyard in Fußach on the Austrian shore of Lake Constance, where the hull was welded together. At the beginning of January 2010, the new building in the towing formation was brought to the BSB shipyard in Friedrichshafen by the work ship Friedrichshafen and the motor ship Graf Zeppelin .
With the new building, the BSB invested eight million euros in their ship fleet.
Design and construction
The construction is a three-deck ship in steel construction. The dimensions of the 400-ton ship are one of the largest passenger ships in the White Fleet, with a length of 58.2 meters and a width of 12.2 meters. It offers a maximum of 1000 passengers, 250 seats inside and 515 seats outside, the rest is standing room. 700 places are offered in charter traffic. It is built in such a way that people with disabilities can also take the elevator to the upper deck. The ship has 50 bicycle parking spaces, is fully air-conditioned and fully heated. It is equipped with the most modern, fuel-saving engine and propeller technology. The two diesel engines together produce 773 kW (1050 hp). The top speed is 26.6 km / h. It is intended to replace the motor ship Baden in daily scheduled traffic . The 75-year-old oldtimer takes over round trips and regular traffic to Rorschach from his new home port of Lindau .
Ship name
According to old seamanship, the BSB did not announce the official name of the ship until the ship was christened on June 19, 2010 in front of the staircase at the Überlingen landing site. Before that, when the ship Überlingen, built in 1935 , was decommissioned in December 2005, there were vehement demands from the citizens of Überlingen to “baptize the next new ship Überlingen ”. This demand was also underlined with a reader campaign by the Südkurier when the managing director of the Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe, Jörg Handreke, received 400 letters with this demand on the last voyage of the then Überlingen . Politicians stood up and the question of the name even played a role in the mayor election campaign of Überlingen two years ago: A candidate stood up for a new Überlingen and hoped to score points. He still didn't make it. But the then elected Lord Mayor Sabine Becker considered it important from the tourist city's point of view to use herself accordingly after taking office. She was godmother on June 19, 2010.
